

For games that require or benefit from faster reaction times, a higher framerate can be the difference between victory and defeat. Simply put, running games at a higher framerate allows for more animation detail, reduces input lag, and generally allows for a better gaming experience. Next-gen consoles like Xbox Series X|S and the PS5 begin to unravel these precedents by officially ushering in hardware support for up to 120 FPS in select games. You can either purchase a subscription for $10 a month, or pay $15 a month which bundles Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, and Xbox Game Pass for PC into one complete package.Gaming on a console can be an excellent way to experience the broad world of video games, but consoles have historically lagged far behind powerful gaming PCs for sheer power. Gears 5 is available through Xbox Game Pass. Our cinematics also have much higher quality reflections, lens flares, depth of field, and motion blur on the Xbox One X compared to the original Xbox One and Xbox One S. We have screen space reflections and higher quality ambient occlusion as a result. For multiplayer on Xbox One X we were able to introduce additional rendering features since we are running the same frame rate as Xbox One.

It was a large amount of work across a lot of disciplines to pull it off, but I really think it was worth it and is probably the best example of harnessing the additional power of the Xbox One X.

We didn't want to have a compromise like Gears of War 4 where you had to choose 1080p 60 FPS or 4K 30 FPS. We put a line in the sand early on in development of Gears 5 that we wanted the campaign to be 60 FPS on Xbox One X. The next-generation of consoles seems to be focusing on better frame rates - up to 120 FPS - so it's great to see that we're getting a taste of it with Xbox One X.
